There's a very good reason why you won't find a bunch of shampoo and conditioner recommendations here. Why? Because I haven't found many that were worth writing about - ones that I liked, that worked well for me. Skin care and makeup, sure - no problem. But hair care? That's another matter altogether. And I know I'm not the only one dealing with this dilemma. If you have hair and you're trying to go the more-natural/non-toxic route, then you know it isn't exactly easy, especially if you can't afford drop $30-40 on a 8 oz bottle each month. Sure, I did the no-poo thing (baking soda + vinegar) for about a week a year ago and all I can say is that I'm glad I work from home. It wasn't a pretty site (or smell). I know others have had success doing it - but its not for me and I have a huge hunch it's not for the majority of you either.
When I landed back home last month after being away on a work+vacation getaway, my scalp began to itch almost immediately. I knew the change of seasons was drying things out because this happens every year pretty much on queue. And through winter I usually suffer with an intensely itchy scalp and as a result, flaky scalp which I find entirely embarrassing. I'd heard some great things about Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue so I purchased MGA's Shampoo and Conditioner Duo from The Nature of Beauty. Just a few days later the box arrived on my doorstep and I took a shower on my lunch break (another benefit of working from home - though I don't usually do it) to put it to the test.
The herbal aroma is something I'm becoming quite addicted to, quite possibly because it reminds me of my childhood home. It is decidedly not masculine, nor feminine, but gender-neutral. Both my husband and I like the smell of it. The dominant scent that stands out to me is Melaleuca Alternafolia (tea tree) as it reminds me of my childhood. Our house was always stocked with tea tree oil.
The MGA Shampoo has a gel/liquid soap consistency and foams well. It resembles the color of raw honey. The MGA conditioner is an off-white color with a not too thick, not too thin, creamy texture.
To quote my husband "this is definitely the best non-toxic shampoo and conditioner you've ever bought or received to test". While I am much more accustomed to the fact that many more-natural products perform differently than their conventional counterparts, he still very much compares the two side-by-side. The difference with MGA is that the shampoo lathers like a conventional shampoo - very well, leaves hair feeling clean (imagine that!) and it rinses out completely. The conditioner though, is the super star of the show. I have very thick hair that has a great propensity towards frizziness and MGA's Conditioner makes it feel oh-so-soft and truly tames my tresses.
And then there is my now-a-thing-of-the-past itchy scalp. The intense itching, resulting in intense itching slash burning, has been substantially tamed. It's no wonder they added "Scalp Rescue™" to their products. They indeed rescued me!
An excellent value! The 8.8 fl. oz bottle of shampoo or conditioner is $15, but you'll save more if you buy the 16 oz. value size (which I'm definitely doing next time) for $25 which at my estimate, should last approximately 3 months if two people are using it. I'm also going to pick up some of the travel sizes for only $4.80 and keep them in my suitcase because I forgot my shampoo + conditioner last week on my 4-day business trip and had to use the hotel's (ugh).

How Long Will A Bottle Last?
I purchased the MGA Shampoo + Conditioner Duo on September 16th, received & started using it on September 19th so next week (October 18th) my husband and I will have used it for 1 month exclusively. There is more shampoo than conditioner left (I'm the conditioner hog) but that's because the shampoo is very concentrated and you don't need as much as you normally would and I feel like my hair needs more conditioner right now. In terms of inches, right this very moment - there is 2 1/4 inches of shampoo left and 5/8 of an inch of conditioner. The 8.8 fl. oz bottles measure 6 1/4 inches tall - yes, I did get a measuring tape out.
Would I Buy This Again?
Absolutely! This is definitely going to be a new staple in our house. I'll be surprised if something comes along and knocks this off the pedestal we have put it up on. I definitely recommend MGA Shampoo + Conditioner and can't wait to try the rest of the products!
