Organic Skin Care That Gives Back :: Kahina - Giving Beauty Review + $134 Giveaway

“I strongly believe in the possibility of connecting with people from other cultures and creating an environment in which the little things we do throughout or daily lives positively affect the lives of people around the world. Even in something as seemingly inconsequential as our choice of skin care, it’s about a consciousness of the decisions we make every day,”
~ Katharine L’Heureux, Kahina-Giving Beauty Founder

Mission:

The mission of Kahina - Giving Beauty is a noble one and I adore this brand's ultimate intention to help support the wellbeing of women on a global scale.  Not only do you promote healthy skin when you use this line, but you also help other women on the other side of the world.  Argan oil comes from the South African argan forests in Morocco and its harvested and pressed by Berber women in argan oil cooperatives.  In this cooperative, women of all ages work together to make money.  Some of the women simply help bring in money to help their husbands, others are widows who must support themselves and their children.  Kahina - Giving Beauty gives a whopping 25% of their profits to the argan oil cooperatives for educational and women's right programs.  Many of the women are learning to read and write through these programs, including how to write their own name.

Packaging:

The boxes and bottles are purposefully simple and modern, yet they have meaning.  The scrolly design on the outside of both are the actual signatures of Berber women who work in the argan oil cooperative in Morocco, who these products help support.  Click here to read more about them (I loved seeing their faces, reading about them - about how happy they are, how grateful they are and how proud they are of their work at the cooperative).

The bottles are made of recyclable violet glass and while they mostly appear black, when in a brightly lit area - you'll see that they are actually a beautiful deep, dark purple.  There are no labels - so nothing to slough off in the shower or with wet hands (and less waste).  The boxes are made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) recycled materials and if you're in New York, you can drop the bottles off at the Giving Beauty showroom and they'll recycle them for you (or you can simply recycle them as you do everything else).

I think they did an amazing job with the packaging.  This is always one area that seems to disappoint in the organic skin care arena.  Sure there are many organic brands out there but you'll be hard pressed to find them housed in chic and sophisticated packaging such as this.  I've really seen nothing like it - this is a line I envision stumbling upon in a high end spa.

Review:

This light cream turns to a very mild lather when mixed with water in my hands.  Works very well at removing makeup and residue of the day yet its gentle enough not to strip natural oils from my skin.

 Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Serum

This has a delicately pleasant aroma.  While the base is Argan oil, its complemented by rejuvenating sea buckthorn and carrot seed oil for its anti-aging properties.  I would recommend for dry and/or aging skin not prone to breakouts.  While this may seem pricey, remember - you only need 1, maybe 2 drops per application for your entire face and neck (apply to moist skin).  I use this everywhere - face, neck, under and above eyes and lips.  This bottle will easily last 6 months.

Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion

Only one pump is needed to moisturize my entire face and neck and I would recommend this to those with dry skin.  Perfect for winter.  Lightweight, easily absorbant and doesn't leave a residue.  Tip: If you have extremely dry skin, apply the serum or argan oil before this.  I've been using this at night only, but in another month or so when the weather has thoroughly parched my skin, I will likely mix this with a serum/facial oil for intense hydration.  Very light aroma.

Kahina 100% Organic Argan Oil

Argan oil is known for its exceptionally high Vitamin E content which makes sense that its so multi-functional.  Vitamin E is one of those secret weapon ingredients that has the ability to heal and give skin that coveted glow.  It can take up to 8 hours to produce just 1 liter of argan oil since the extraction process is done by hand.  Quite the multi-purpose product - I've been using this on my face in the morning by itself, no other moisturizer (only 2 drops!), on my arms, elbows, knees, cuticles, feet and hair.  After I read that my blogger friend, Liz Thompson was using argan oil on her hair - I decided to try it out myself because in the winter my scalp gets unbearably dry and flakey (no, not dandruff).  Once a week, I've been skipping conditioner after shampooing - instead using a couple drops of argan oil on my scalp and massaging what remains on my hands down to the ends.  I love the result.  Flyaways are tamed and my scalp is not itchy and dry.  I'm going to do this all winter.  I've also been massaging the oil into my nails and cuticles because I always seem to get hang-nails and this is helping to keep them at bay.

Giveaway Sponsor:

Bella Floria is a relatively new online natural and organic beauty boutique and they're among one of my handful of favorite beauty sites because they have stringent standards and some of my favorite brands.  I appreciate that owner, Emelyn Rodriguez meticulously evaluates every - single - ingredient - one by one, when deciding to carry a line, because that's exactly what I do when I consider products for myself and for Fig+Sage.  Bella Floria sent us the Kahina - Giving Beauty Travel Kit and Facial Serum to try for the purpose of a honest and candid review.  To learn more about our review criteria, click here
